THE UNITED NATIONS

The United Nations is a powerful governing body that encompasses Earth's original nations, as well as a vast array of space-faring societies, planetary colonies, and territories across the galaxy. Over centuries of diplomatic consolidation and interstellar expansion, the United Nations has become the central authority uniting not only human civilizations but also a diverse collection of species, all working under its banner for shared security, prosperity, and order.

Unrelated to the real world United Nations, the UN seen in RMC-14 is an independent conglomeration of nations that controls the entirety of Earth and several other colonies in space.

Formation of the United Nations

Pre-Exodus

Earth has gone through devastating ecological and geopolitical crises. A mix of unchecked pollution, global warming, and wars between the SPP, TSE, and the parent nations of the soon to be formed United nations, for resources which devastated much of the habitable land.

As the two other major powers took their resources and people to space, earth was left increasingly inhospitable, the major spacefaring factions recognizing that the planet can no longer serve as the hub of their operations and government.

Post-Exodus

With no choice but to collaborate, the remaining nations and governments on earth combined to form the United Nations, and address the power vacuum left behind. Through this formation, the UN worked to address the ecological collapse, restore stability, and enact policies at sustained development, using it's global presence to secure peace and partial restoration of earth.

At the same time, the Horizon Expansion Act is created, in response to overpopulation and the people's need for new homes and resources, and as part of a broader effort to secure alliances with interstellar life that could assist with their goals.

Current Day

As the people of the United Nations spread into the wider space, it continues to form alliances with various interstellar life, further adding to the wide civilization. The UN, now an interstellar governing body, is a symbol of peace and diplomacy - but earth itself is not the central hub anymore.

While earth remains home to cultural and historical significance, it is no longer the driving force behind the future of their people. The major powers have established their own systems and thriving colonies, leaving earth as a relic mostly used for tourism and education, a look at humanity's origins.

New Horizon Day is celebrated on October 28th across all United Nations member worlds, to commemorate the formation of the United Nations, and the peace and prosperity it has upheld for everyone. Each year, citizens and service members alike gather under the same sky, or skies, to honor peace, unity, and the endless horizon yet to be explored. They also usually have fireworks.

Structure and Governance

The United Nations operates under a highly centralized government, borrowing much of its structure from the United States but adapting it to manage its interstellar jurisdiction. At the apex of this system is the Office of the President of the United Nations—a position of immense influence, wielding near-imperial authority over all member species and territories. While the President is elected, the office often consolidates power through executive decrees, emergency powers, and a tightly controlled legislative process.

Branches of Power

Though the United Nations maintains a formal commitment to democratic principles, in practice, much of the authority rests with a highly centralized leadership. The United Nations Marine Corps and the Colony Marshal Bureau are the primary enforcers of the UN’s laws and authority:

• United Nations Marine Corps: The UNMC is the military arm of the United Nations, tasked with protecting the interstellar territories, maintaining order, and defending colonies against both internal and external threats. It combines traditional military forces with advanced space fleets, planetary defense systems, and elite special operations units, operating not only on Earth but across numerous worlds, often deployed to resolve civil unrest or protect critical interspecies relations.
• Colony Marshal Bureau: The CMB functions as the law enforcement division responsible for maintaining security across the United Nations' many colonies and space stations. The Marshals ensure that UN laws are upheld even in the most remote regions, and they are often granted broad authority to declare martial law, suppress rebellion, and maintain order, regardless of the cultures they encounter. Their jurisdiction spans human colonies as well as those of other species.
• Provost Marshal Office: The PMO serves as the central authority for maintaining order, discipline, and integrity within both the military and governmental ranks. Tasked with enforcing regulations, the PMO ensures that all personnel—from frontline soldiers to high-ranking officials—adhere to established standards of conduct and protocol. Their role extends beyond traditional law enforcement, as they also conduct foreign intelligence, and internal investigations to detect, prevent, and address corruption, espionage, and misuse of authority.

Influence and Control

The United Nations is founded on principles of unity, security, and peace, aiming to create a stable interstellar order where all member species cooperate for the common good. However, this ideal has often been maintained through strict control, military presence, and surveillance.

While core worlds experience a degree of political freedom and affluence, colonies on the edge of UN space often endure direct military oversight and constant monitoring by the CMB. The UN’s leadership exercises strict control over all factions within its domain, viewing dissent or rebellion as a threat to interspecies harmony. Those who challenge the UN’s authority are swiftly dealt with, branded as rebels or insurrectionists.

Technology and Expansion

With unmatched technological advancements, the United Nations maintains a cutting-edge military, surveillance network, and interplanetary infrastructure. The UN employs advanced spacecraft, AI-controlled defense systems, and terraforming technologies to extend its reach and solidify its dominance. Cybersecurity is a central aspect of the UN’s strategy, with constant data monitoring and surveillance used to preempt threats from both internal factions and external powers.

The UN’s technological supremacy allows it to maintain control over its far-flung colonies, using automated systems, orbital defenses, and drone fleets to enforce its will across vast distances. Even in the most remote parts of its domain, the UN’s presence is felt through an intricate web of technology designed to maintain peace, prosperity, and loyalty.

Ideology

The United Nations embodies a unifying ideology that prioritizes collective peace, unity, and security across its vast, diverse dominion. Driven by the principle that collaboration among species is essential for mutual survival and prosperity, the UN seeks to forge a sense of shared purpose among its member civilizations. Its policies and initiatives are designed to promote cooperation, resolve conflicts peacefully, and encourage cultural exchange to build understanding and trust. By ensuring that all species contribute to and benefit from shared goals, the UN aims to create a balanced society where technological, scientific, and social advancements are shared for the greater good.

Vision and Legacy

The United Nations envisions a unified galaxy, where diverse species put aside their differences to work in harmony and prosperity. However, as the organization grows in power, so too does resistance to its rule. Numerous colonies, many populated by non-human species, have begun to question the UN’s overreach and its often heavy-handed approach to governance. Rebellions, both small and large, simmer in the outer reaches, challenging the very foundations of the UN’s authority.

Foreign Relations

NATION	RELATIONS
The Colony Liberation Front	The United Nations is openly hostile to the CLF and sees it as an ongoing threat to stability and governance throughout its territories. The CLF is a decentralized network of insurgent cells bound by their goal of bringing instability to UN rule and appealing for autonomy and liberation from what it considers as oppressive rule. These cells operate clandestinely, coordinating actions to destabilize the UN, using methods of sabotage, espionage, and directed attacks against significant installations and personnel. The CLF is now considered one of the most plausible internal threats to the cohesion of the UN, while its influence spreads throughout the colonial worlds, seeding unrest and resistance among the populations that lost faith in the UN's governance.
Socialist Progressive Peoples	The UN and the SPP are in a cold war, as neither side is willing to risk the catastrophic consequences of a full-scale war. Both are aware that an all-out conflict would devastate resources, destabilize neutral territories, and expose weaknesses to other factions waiting to exploit the chaos. This extended, uneasy balance has led to extensive espionage, propaganda campaigns, and covert operations; both the UN and SPP are working to undermine the peoples' trust in the other, hoping to cause neutral colonies to join their cause and turn the cold shoulder to the other. However, tensions flare on the galaxy’s outer edges, where colonies and fringe planets lie beyond the core’s oversight. Skirmishes between UN and SPP forces frequently erupt in these isolated regions, as each side maneuvers for strategic advantage and territory. These clashes are rarely documented and often hidden from public view to avoid political fallout. Yet, for the soldiers and civilians caught in these flashpoints, the cold war feels dangerously close to turning hot. Both the UN and SPP invest in their military readiness, intelligence networks, and diplomatic corps, preparing for the possibility that these “cold” hostilities might one day break into a full-scale, open war.
Three Suns Empire	The United Nations and the Three Suns Empire share a cautious alliance, strained by competing ambitions for colonial expansion. While diplomatic agreements maintain a formal partnership, the UN grows increasingly wary of TSE’s close relationship with Weston-Yamada. UN military officials suspect that Weston-Yamada may be prioritizing TSE interests, fueling distrust and complicating the alliance. This suspicion has deepened the rift between the factions, straining diplomatic efforts as each side watches the other closely for signs of betrayal. Though neither side seeks open conflict, tensions over colonial influence and corporate loyalty have made the alliance increasingly fragile, with both powers preparing for the possibility of a breakdown.
