Provost Intelligence Department

The Provost Intelligence Department is the highly secretive intelligence arm of the Provost Marshal Office within the United Nations. Though the agency’s existence is publicly acknowledged, nearly everything beyond its name remains shrouded in ambiguity. Its mandate, internal hierarchy, and operational methods are subjects of speculation at best, and outright myth at worst. Even within the UN, concrete knowledge about its activities is confined to a select few at the highest levels of authority, leaving most to debate what, if anything, is truly known about how the department functions.

The PID is tasked with safeguarding the UN from both internal and external threats, ranging from espionage and insurgency to subversion and clandestine foreign operations. The department reports directly to the Provost Chief Marshal but maintains a direct line to the President of the United Nations, currently Cyrus Solara, for sensitive intelligence and strategic briefings.

Directorates

The PID is divided into two primary directorates, each with distinct operational priorities:

Directorate for Internal Security

The DIS functions as the UN’s internal counterintelligence and security apparatus. Its agents are tasked with identifying, tracking, and neutralizing threats to the UN from within, including insurgents, spies, and those who undermine military or civilian institutions. Their authority is extensive, often described as “carte blanche” to investigate, detain, and neutralize threats across UN territories.

• Scope of Operations:
  • DIS agents operate in both military and civilian environments. Depending on the assignment, they may appear in their official stark-blue PID uniform to assert authority, or adopt unmarked civilian attire for covert surveillance and clandestine operations.
• Operational Focus:
  • Counterintelligence and anti-espionage operations
  • Surveillance of UN military personnel and civilian populations
  • Investigation and neutralization of internal subversive networks
  • Covert interventions to prevent uprisings or insurrection within colonies
• Reputation:
  • The DIS is regarded as the ultimate enforcer of internal UN security, agents are capable of operating independently in environments ranging from core worlds to remote colonies.

Directorate for Foreign Intelligence

The DFI is responsible for intelligence gathering beyond UN-controlled space. Information about this directorate is extremely scarce, if any is even known. Its mission focuses on acquiring strategic intelligence on and infiltrating other interstellar powers such as the SPP, TSE or even terrorist organizations like the CLF.

• Scope of Operations:
  • The DFI maintains a clandestine networks of spies, informants, and assets in foreign territories. Operatives engage in covert observation, infiltration, and manipulation of foreign political, military, and economic systems.
• Operational Focus:
  • Long-term intelligence collection on rival powers
  • Sabotage and disruption of adversary operations
  • Counterintelligence to neutralize foreign agents in UN space
  • Strategic assessment to inform UN policy and military planning
• Secrecy:
  • The identities and locations of DFI personnel are among the most closely guarded secrets within the UN. Even other UN high ranking officials rarely know the full scope of their missions, and some dossiers are accessible only to the President and the Provost Chief Marshal.

Leadership and Command

The Director of the Provost Intelligence Department is appointed by the Provost Chief Marshal and serves as the operational head of the PID. This director is responsible for coordinating the two directorates, overseeing intelligence collection, and ensuring that threats are identified and neutralized efficiently. Due to the department’s sensitive nature, the director maintains direct access to the President of the United Nations, briefing him on security concerns, foreign intelligence, and potential crises.

History

The Provost Intelligence Department traces its origins to the intelligence organizations. Recognizing the need for a unified approach, President Cyrus Solara spearheaded the creation of a centralized intelligence apparatus under the Provost Marshal Office.
