Duties
The Chief MP has many different responsibilities. But your main responsibility is to ensure that Marine Law is being properly enforced. You are the second highest authority in regards to Marine Law aboard the Vessel, the first being the Commanding Officer, however you are usually the one dealing with Marine law and as such, with Great authority comes great responsibility... and lots of paperwork...
You should be ensuring that all prisoners are properly processed and charged correctly before being placed into their cells. As even experienced personnel sometimes forget or make mistakes. You should also be making sure that your Inmates are being treated in accordance with Marine Law, that they are not being abused or having their rights violated. You are able to make arrests if needed, but you shouldn't be running around searching for criminals, as one of your main duties is to process appeals and ensure other Members of the Military Police are doing their jobs correctly and Legally.
You should ensure there are proper records of all crimes, charges and uses of force. as well as documentation of any appeals that prisoners make in regards to their sentences. These documents may seem superflous at first, but having these records is incredibly useful when trying to figure out who arrested and charged a person, or if a particular MP over-extended their use of force beyond the limits of the law. It falls into your powers to reduce sentences of prisoners whom have been incorrectly charged, dropping charges that are either incorrect or false per the spirit of marine law. You are there to enforce the Law and uphold the proper proceedures, but that does not mean you must be a tyrant.
You are one of two people on the ship who can authorise the use of Lethal force against suspects who have presented a threat to the crew, this should be done sparingly as any authorisation of lethal force you will be expected to answer for, anyone who is taken down using lethal force must be given adequete medical care after the fact, and properly arrested and charged.
The Chain Of Command & Military Police
The Chain of Command regarding Marine Law is quite simple, at the top is the Commanding Officer, followed closely by yourself. However this is not a pass for either one of you to behave however you wish. You are beholden to Marine law much the same as anyone else, and you will answer to Higher Powers should you abuse the authority provided to either one of you.
